Year Three
Marital and Family Therapy Track
Post-Graduate Training Program

Marital Therapy
The Gestalt Institute of Central Ohio (GICO) Advanced Training Marital and Family Therapy is based on models that are used by therapists around the world. Clinicians will have an opportunity to learn position-oriented family therapy, as well as the marital diagnostic framework developed by Norman Shub, and found to be extremely helpful by clinicians in many countries.

In the marital family program, participants have an opportunity to first learn the model of marital therapy taught at the Institute and then see marital therapy demonstrated by a variety of couples who reflect the marital diagnostic spectrum from couples where there is no love to couples who are struggling with affairs to couples who are continually fighting. The marital and family training program helps therapists learn how to work with couples who are struggling with a variety of issues.

Topics to be included the engagement process of couples therapy:

  • working on the basic philosophy
  • learning to access the core conflict using contact skills as an entry point
  • the marital diagnosis framework
  • attunement to the couple
  • couples therapy over time
  • dealing with characterologic couples
  • differential models of couples treatment, i.e.,
    • no love
    • affairs
    • no commitment (to name just a few)
  • learning how to deal with the true crises through couples therapy
  • using yourself as a couples therapist
Participants who finish the Advanced Year in Marital Therapy feel that they have really gained a methodology, a framework, a philosophy, and a skill set that allows them to be successful with couples.

Family Therapy
In addition to the marital therapy, the Institute offers Advanced Training in Family Therapy. Training in Family Therapy is based on the Position-Oriented Family Therapy Model used extensively around the world. Participants in the Family Therapy Training will have an opportunity to work with families, as well as see family therapy demonstrated. The different kinds of family structures and issues will be explored experientially with specific families coming to the training that are struggling with the type being taught. Participants will have an opportunity to:
  • see the model in action
  • understand how to use it
  • practice it with families
  • integrate this skill set into their family work
Topics covered include:
  • Engaging the Family
  • Understanding How to Use the Contact Process to Build Engagement
  • Dealing With Resistance in the Family Process
  • Entry Points
  • Learning to Create Experiential Positioning
  • Helping Clients Own the Position
  • The Process of Change in Family Therapy
  • Dealing With the Characterologic Family Members
  • Dealing With the Different Kinds of Family Crises
  • The Role of the Family Therapist
  • Integration of Individual and Marital into Family and Child Into Family
  • Termination
Participants in this Advanced Year will come away with a real understanding of Position-Oriented Family Therapy, have many opportunities to practice, and have a real skill set that they can integrate into their ongoing clinical practice.
