What is Gestalt Therapy?
Change, Growth, Discovery

Gestalt therapy, as it is practiced today, evolved from the landmark work of Frederick and Laura Perls, Paul Goodman, Isadore From, and others, who led the humanistic revolution of the 1940's. The work, an extension of Gestalt perceptual psychology, has its roots in existentialism and humanistic field theory and body approaches. The Gestalt approach is based in the here and now. It is growth-driven and experiential and treats the person, system, or organization as a whole.

Gestalt therapy is a present-centered, relationship-oriented treatment approach that focuses on awareness and encourages participation in lifelong growth. It is about change. The Gestalt therapist or organizational consultant approaches clients from the perspective that individuals and the systems they operate in are fundamentally able to adapt and grow. By discovering impediments to growth, the Gestalt therapist helps the client develop new, creative solutions to issues.

Because of the therapeutic importance of the here and now, the nature of the contact between therapist and client is a critical element in enhancing awareness, understanding resistance, and creating change. The Gestalt therapist approaches clients from the perspective that individuals and the systems they operate in are fundamentally able to adapt and grow. By discovering impediments to growth, the Gestalt therapist helps the client develop new, creative solutions to issues while encouraging the full acceptance of personal responsibility and self-support. The trained Gestalt therapist uses specific therapeutic methods to work toward the completion of a client's unfinished issues.

The Gestalt approach balances intellectual understanding with an appreciation for action and experience. Rather than interpret and analyze from the outside, the Gestalt practitioner attempts to heighten and illuminate the client's experience of life, self and others.

As a result of the emphasis placed on fostering real lifelong change in the self, in the couple, in the family, and in the organization, the Gestalt approach is one of the most respected working models for mental health professionals throughout the world.
